When working with an iconic brand known the world over such as Lego, the principle goals & biggest wins in crafting a digital gaming experience undoubtedly go beyond neatly arranged layouts & efficient flows, or dunks on the competition & how well it monetizes.

There were still countless decisions made about every screen and interaction point, aimed at making a great interface for a mid-core (read: complex) game feel effortlessly usable — allowing the brand to shine above all else. But with Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed, I think it’s also worth sharing an inner look at the design thinking behind…

In the past few years of my design career, I’ve had a number of opportunities to speak about UX Design & Design Thinking to students, design peers, and work colleagues in the gaming industry who aren’t that familiar with the principles & methods of my design specialty. Championing the wisdom and elegance of design thinking helped me solidify my knowledge of the craft & also deepen my confidence in it being the right fit for me.

Leveling up with better UX insight 💡

A good UX designer is versed in many tools that help make our work better informed, faster to iterate, and easier to communicate. Unfortunately, many of the kind of tools that tech & software companies use all the time didn’t really exist in practice at the game studio I worked for, so part of my role as the only UX designer in the studio became focused on investigating, testing out, and integrating new ways of thinking about our experience’s strengths & weaknesses and our players’ goals.

The biggest wins I found were in using small-scale user testing for more data-driven…

Understanding the pipeline & UX’s place in it.

Being the first and only UX Designer at a AAA mobile game studio created some challenges in figuring out where my skillset & expertise could make the most impact in a process that has made games without a UX designer for over a decade.

In a typical software development pipeline, UX or product designers are responsible for much of the product’s feature designs & flows; in game development, game designers have very different skill sets and take on a myriad of unique responsibilities to meet the increased complexity and scope of designing monetizable fun. …

About 5 months after my dad died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest, I have my first dream with him in it. In the evening before I sleep, we sit at the kitchen table with my mom and husband, as we do most weekends now, and talk about life and the world. We try not to sit and wallow in our sadness too much by talking of other things, but sometimes we speak of the reality of life after dad. Mom says that even though she’s going to church regularly now — for the first time in our entire 25 years in…

I woke up too early this morning, at 5:30, and couldn’t go back to sleep, sad thoughts flooded my mind again and I couldn’t block it out just lying there trying to sleep, so I went upstairs to make a tea, leaving Colin to sleep. I see mom stayed up last night and cleaned the kitchen. I guess the pain wouldn’t let her sleep. That, or her fastidious cleaning obsession kept her up. I’m going to guess the former.

She put out a candle on the dining room table with a photo of the whole family with you, from Dan’s…

My parents asked me how it feels to be turning 23, if I am happy. I said I felt I was on track to be where I want to be. They said I was in some ways more accomplished than they had been at this age, then they pondered and reminisced what exactly they had been doing at the ripe old age of 23.

1984, Timișoara, Romania. My mom was in one of her final years of computer engineering, struggling with a masters thesis on a burgeoning technology which had already fundamentally changed since she started learning it. …
